Course Description:

The word “forensic” originates from the Latin word ‘forensis’, which means public, to the forum, or public discussion. A modern definition of “forensic” is relating to, used in, or suitable to a court of law. Any science used for the purposes of the law is a forensic science. Forensic sciences deal with the application of scientific knowledge to legal problems and they are vital tools for unearthing the truth in any legal proceeding.

Forensic sciences, including forensic chemistry, forensic biology, forensic anthropology, forensic medicine, forensic materials science, forensic engineering, computational forensics and so on, are broadly used to resolve civil disputes, to justly enforce criminal laws and government regulations, and to protect public health.

This course will contribute better learning fundamentals of forensic sciences to forensic students, lawyers, corporate officials, bank officials, police personnels as well as this course will become a standard reference for those beginning their education in forensic science

Course Structure:

Module 1: Introduction to Forensic Science
­Definitions and concepts in forensic science, Historical Development, Pioneers in Forensic Science, Laws and Principles of forensic science, Scope of forensic science
Module 2: Organizational set up of Forensic Science Laboratories
Hierarchical set up of Central Forensic Science Laboratories, International Forensic Organizations, Forensic Science Laboratories in India, Government Examiners of Questioned Documents, Fingerprint Bureaus, National Crime Records Bureau, Police & Detective Training Schools, Bureau of Police Research & Development, Directorate of Forensic Science and Mobile Crime Laboratories
Module 3: Domains in Forensic Science
Branches of Forensic Science, Police officers, Prosecution, Judicial Officers and Medico legal expert etc. Role and Qualifications of forensic scientists. Code of conduct for forensic scientists, Ethical issue in Forensic Science
Module 4: Crime Scene Investigation
Definition of crime scene, Types of crime scene, Responsibilities of first responder at crime scene, Processing the Crime Scene, Protection and Isolation of the crime scene, Recording the Crime Scene (Note Taking, Photography, Video recording), Sketching of crime scene (Rough Sketch), Searching of physical evidences, Collection and Packaging of physical evidences, Labeling of Physical Evidences, Chain of custody, Forwarding Letter and transportation of physical evidences to the laboratories
Module 5: Forensic Evidences
Evidences, Classification of evidences: Testimony Evidence and Physical Evidence, Classification of Physical Evidence, sources of physical evidence, signification and value of physical evidence, linkage between crime scene, victim and criminal
Module 6: Forensic Biology and Serology
Definition & Scope of Forensic Biology & Serology, Nature & Type of Biological evidences (Both animal & plant origin), various body fluids, their composition & Forensic Importance: Blood, Semen, Saliva, Urine, milk etc. Types of blood groups, DNA profiling
Module 7: Toxicology
Definition, dosage, administration of poisons, Classification of poisons, action of poisons & factors modifying its action, Drugs of Abuse, Signs and symptoms of addiction, Role of toxicologists, Significance of toxicological findings, Functions and roles of toxicologists in a forensic science lab
Module 8: Forensic Physics
Definition & Scope of Forensic Physics, Nature & Types of Physical evidences and examination: Soil, Glass, Paint & Tool marks and their forensic importance
Module 9: Questioned Document Examination
Introduction: Documents, Questioned document, Handwriting and its characteristics (Class and Individual), Principles of Identification, Types of cases in Questioned Documents
Module 10: Fingerprint Examination
Introduction: Fingerprints, types of fingerprints, ridge characteristics, ridge details, ridge counting and tracing, locating, searching and lifting of chance fingerprints, Development of latent fingerprint, significance of Fingerprints
Module 11: Forensic Ballistics
Introduction: Ballistics (Internal, terminal and external), Firearm and its parts, ammunition, types of ammunition, various components of ammunitions (Primary charge, Main charge, Projectiles and their types, wads, lubricants etc.), Rifling, Firing mechanism, Forensic identification of firearms
Module 12: Forensic Anthropology ­­
Introduction: Forensic anthropology, History, Scope and Significance of forensic anthropology, Identification of human and non-humans, Estimation of age, sex, on ethnicity and stature

Student Learning Outcomes: After completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate and analyze the crime scene
  • Analyze the characteristics and properties of different evidences like glass, soil, paint, tool marks, hair and fiber which are normally encountered at the scene of crime
  • Identify and examine these evidences in the laboratory

Assessment & Evaluation

The students who enrolled as per the course selected are assessed by the allotted assignment and presentation and evaluated by conducting online examination and a viva by our forensic expert. The exam will be conducted by the concerned authority on the specific date and time. The relevant details regarding submission of assignment and presentation, duration of exam, date and time of online examination along with viva is mentioned via mail to the student.

After the successful completion of course along with online assessment, the mark sheets and certificate is generated and sent to the postal address of the student as mentioned in their application form and uploaded documents.
